The Balance 502 sailing catamaran represents the latest evolution in the acclaimed Balance range and continues the long-standing partnership between Du Toit Yacht Design and Balance Catamarans, the global catamaran brand founded by Phil Berman. Launched in October 2025, the 502 introduces a new generation of lightweight, carbon-reinforced performance cruising catamarans that combine innovation, speed, and exceptional liveability.

As with every Balance model, the naval architecture, exterior styling, and interior layout of the Balance 502 were designed and engineered entirely by Du Toit Yacht Design. The firm’s deep experience in performance multihulls—combined with its precision in composite structural design—ensures that the 502 embodies Balance’s philosophy: fast, strong, easy to handle, and comfortable to live aboard.

A refined new model

The Balance 502 replaces the iconic Balance 526 as the 50-foot model in the Balance line-up. Purpose-built for modern blue-water sailors, it blends high-end carbon construction with advanced propulsion technology to deliver impressive performance, durability, and energy efficiency.

Two versions are available: the Balance 502 Carbon Core (CC) and the Balance 502 VersaDrive Carbon Core (Hybrid). Both share identical hulls and structures, designed by Du Toit Yacht Design to deliver exceptional stiffness and low weight without sacrificing strength or comfort.

Precision design, advanced performance

The Balance 502’s carbon-reinforced foam-core hulls, carbon substructure, and powerful 143 m² sail plan make it a lively, sea-kindly performer. Upwind, she maintains 8–9 knots with minimal leeway, thanks to her high-aspect-ratio carbon daggerboards. Reaching speeds regularly exceed 18 knots, while in favourable conditions she can surge into the low 20-knot range—controlled, balanced, and responsive on the helm.

Her hull form and performance characteristics were modelled using Velocity Prediction Programs (VPPs) by the Wolfson Unit at the University of Southampton, ensuring real-world accuracy at typical cruising displacements.

Carbon Core construction

The entire internal structure of the Balance 502 CC—bulkheads, beams, cabin soles, partition panels, daggerboards, trunks, and rudders—is constructed in carbon fibre. This advanced composite engineering creates a hull that is lighter, quieter, and stiffer, producing a smooth, confident motion even at speed.

Each component is vacuum-bagged with closed-cell foam cores and E-glass, laminated using 100 % vinylester resin. The result is a yacht that epitomises Du Toit Yacht Design’s approach to structural optimisation: strong, efficient, and elegantly engineered for serious ocean travel.

Hybrid propulsion and energy systems

In the VersaDrive Hybrid configuration, Balance Catamarans and Du Toit Yacht Design have introduced one of the most advanced hybrid systems in its class. The system reduces fuel consumption by up to 25 %, while a 36 kW / 48 V lithium battery bank charges at rates of up to 15 kW per engine. Up to 3 kW of solar power further enhances autonomy, creating a self-sustaining platform ideal for long-range cruising.

The Balance 502 also incorporates Integrel E-Power alternator technology, removing the need for a standalone generator. This simplifies the mechanical system, reduces fuel burn and noise, and improves onboard safety by eliminating propane.

Design and living space

Du Toit Yacht Design’s interiors for the Balance 502 continue the studio’s reputation for uniting functionality with refined aesthetics. Every element of the interior layout has been designed for comfort, ergonomics, and performance at sea. Owners can choose from several interior palettes curated by OLC Philadelphia, or customise their finish to match individual tastes.

The saloon is bright and spacious, with panoramic visibility and easy flow between the helm, cockpit, and living areas. Cabins are generous and finished to a high standard, providing the perfect environment for extended live-aboard cruising.

Together, Balance Catamarans Cape Town and Du Toit Yacht Design have created a vessel that defines the next chapter in Balance’s design evolution—combining advanced technology with timeless offshore capability.
