The Balance 580 sailing catamaran represents the next evolution in the Balance range, building on the proven success of the Balance 540 while pushing performance, load-carrying capability, and offshore versatility to a new level. Designed and engineered by Du Toit Yacht Design and built by Balance Catamarans in Cape Town, the 580 refines the Balance philosophy of fast, efficient, blue-water cruising for experienced sailors.
Founded by Phil Berman, Balance Catamarans has earned a global reputation for producing high-performance cruising catamarans that are both capable and accessible. The Balance 580 continues this trajectory, with Du Toit Yacht Design responsible for the naval architecture, structural engineering, deck design, and integration of interior layouts.
Positioned as a larger, more powerful platform within the Carbon Cross series, the 580 delivers increased sail power, higher payload capacity, and extended offshore capability while remaining manageable for owner-operators.
Performance and sail plan
With a powerful 209.5 m² sail plan and refined hull geometry, the Balance 580 is designed to deliver exceptional performance across a wide range of conditions. The increased waterline length and optimised weight distribution contribute to higher average speeds and improved passage-making efficiency.
In lighter airs, the 580 maintains momentum and responsiveness, sailing efficiently where heavier cruising vessels would rely on engine power. As wind strength increases, the combination of main sail, working jib, and additional downwind sails such as the screacher and asymmetric spinnaker allows precise control of power and balance.
The daggerboard configuration provides excellent upwind performance, reducing leeway and improving pointing angles, while also allowing for shallow draft operation when boards are raised. Off the wind, the 580 is capable of sustained high speeds with stability and control, making it equally suited to fast passagemaking and performance-oriented cruising.
As with the Balance 540, performance predictions are developed using Velocity Prediction Programs (VPPs), ensuring that real-world sailing conditions and cruising displacements are accurately reflected.
Carbon Cross construction
The Balance 580 is built using advanced epoxy composite construction with a carbon-reinforced structural system. This approach delivers a lighter, stiffer, and stronger platform, optimised for offshore reliability and long-term durability.

The Balance 580 is equipped with twin Yanmar 4JH80 engines paired with SD60 saildrives, providing reliable propulsion and efficient motoring when required. Fuel, water, and onboard systems are configured to support extended cruising, with sufficient capacity for long-range passagemaking while maintaining weight discipline critical to performance catamarans.
