Ryan du Preez is a Marine and Mechanical Engineer whose passion for the ocean and building began early in life. Growing up in the coastal town of Port Elizabeth, he developed a deep connection to the marine environment through activities such as boating, fishing and diving. This early exposure sparked a lasting fascination with boats and the engineering behind them, ultimately shaping his career path.

After completing school, Ryan pursued a degree in Marine Engineering at Nelson Mandela University, a programme rooted in mechanical engineering with a specialised focus on marine applications. Through his studies, he built a strong foundation in naval architecture, marine propulsion systems and structural design, while developing the analytical and problem-solving skills required to tackle complex engineering challenges.
He went on to complete a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, during which he led a project to design and build a state-of-the-art ship model testing facility. This towing tank was developed to support the university’s ongoing marine research and provides a platform for testing and refining vessel designs. The project stands as a significant achievement early in his career and reflects both his technical capability and his ability to take a concept through to a fully realised system.
Ryan is driven by a strong work ethic and a genuine desire to build and create. He is particularly drawn to the challenge of designing structures that can withstand the forces of the ocean, and he finds great satisfaction in seeing ideas evolve into tangible, functional outcomes.
At Du Toit Yacht Design, Ryan now has the opportunity to combine his lifelong passion for the ocean with his technical expertise. He contributes to the design and development of high-performance yachts, working alongside the team to deliver practical, efficient and well-engineered solutions. His combination of technical skill, dedication and enthusiasm for the marine environment positions him as a valuable and motivated member of the studio.
