Thomas’s life has always revolved around sailing. He spent his childhood sailing Tera dinghies and much of his teenage years living on and off boats, experiences that gave him an early appreciation for the complexity and appeal of yacht design. For him, the challenge of designing structures and systems for yachts lies in the unique interplay between engineering, optimisation and real-world performance — a challenge he finds deeply rewarding.
Before joining DTYD, Thomas gained experience in software development, working as a software development engineer and building strong analytical and systems-based thinking into his skill set. This background informs his approach to design problems, particularly when tackling optimisation challenges and complex technical requirements. His ability to think computationally and structurally allows him to approach yacht design with a perspective that is both modern and highly practical.
He also founded Innovation Lab Education, an initiative focused on designing and teaching a technology-based curriculum for school pupils. Through this venture, Thomas developed educational programmes that introduced students to electronics and design processes in a hands-on way. This experience strengthened not only his entrepreneurial instincts, but also his ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and to think about technology as something practical, accessible and empowering.
At Du Toit Yacht Design, Thomas contributes to the detailed engineering and optimisation of yacht systems, working within the studio’s interdisciplinary team to help solve technical problems and refine design solutions. He thrives in an environment where complex design requirements are constantly evolving, and where collaboration is essential to achieving the right outcome.
Outside of work, Thomas is driven by adventure, whether through cycling, rock climbing or kitesurfing. That same spirit of curiosity and challenge is evident in the way he approaches design — always exploring, refining and pushing for better solutions.
